We drove to Sandwich Harbour, one of the bucket list destinations on our trip.
This narrow beach, between the dunes and the sea, is only accessible at low tide. Of course that makes for some high stakes conditions. Whether dramatized or not, most stories you read contain some element of being stuck, and recovering just in time, etc, etc. Also, the Grand Tour went here, so all in all a pretty cool destination 😎.
As we are quite heavy, and as there are also area's with unpredictable soft sand, and steep dunes, we arranged a guide for the trip. The drive was amazing, and with lower tire pressures than ever, we also managed to do some serious driving in the dunes.
Unfortunately we never got to the actual stretch of beach between the dunes and the sea. We always thought this was on the way to reach Sandwich Harbour, but in fact, it is a bit to the south of Sandwich Harbour itself. When we got there, it was actually high tide. As we thought we had to cross this beach in any case, we had expected the guide to take the tide into account in his planning, but no. So a top tip if you go there: make it very clear that you want to drive this section as well. As for us, we probably have to go back a second time now that we still have some unfinished business here 😉.
