Lake Natron is a saline lake, that can reach temperatures up to 60 degrees, and pH values up to 12 which can burn your skin and eyes. Sometimes the water in the lake even appears to be red in color, due to a type of algae that flourishes in this environment, but unfortunately this was not the case when we visited.
You can imagine that this place is not very hospitable to most forms of life. However, for some reason flamingos always seem to pick the worst places. In fact, according to one article by Smithsonian magazine, over three quarters of all lesser flamingos (the most common species), is born in lake Natron.
